San Marino: U.S. Tariffs Set at 10%

The Republic of San Marino falls within the most favorable tariff bracket under the new U.S. trade policy.

In a significant announcement made yesterday by the White House, the United States has introduced a new round of import tariffs, applying 20% duties on exports from the European Union and even stricter measures on major exporters such as China.

San Marino, while sharing a similar economic ecosystem with the EU, has been included in the lowest tariff bracket of 10%, a condition that may offer a competitive advantage for Sammarinese businesses exporting to the U.S. market.

The U.S. President justified the measures as a means of rebalancing international trade and bringing production back to American soil, stating: “We’ll make others pay half of what we pay”.

According to William Vagnini, Secretary General of ANIS, Sammarinese companies will need to adapt to this new scenario, focusing on market diversification to safeguard current business volumes. He emphasized that Italy and Europe remain the main markets for companies in San Marino, although negative effects on the EU are likely to have some impact on the local economy as well.

Concerns are also being raised on the consumer side: a more cautious mindset may affect spending habits, which could in turn influence business investments.

Confindustria Romagna has voiced its concern about potentially serious consequences for export-oriented industries, particularly in the pharmaceutical, food, and machinery sectors. It is worth noting that the post-pandemic recovery was largely driven by increased exports to the United States.

In this context, several strategic priorities are emerging: avoid knee-jerk reactions toward the U.S., speed up domestic economic support measures, strengthen trade partnerships, and above all, stimulate internal demand within Europe.
