San Marino–EPO Agreement: A New Boost for Patent Protection and Technological Innovation

May, 2025

The Republic of San Marino has taken a strategic step forward in the field of intellectual property by signing a multi-year cooperation agreement with the European Patent Organisation (EPO) in Munich. This agreement — aligned with the Strategic Plan 2028 — aims to strengthen the national patent system while supporting an innovation ecosystem that meets European and international standards.

For the business environment in San Marino, this represents a significant opportunity: the agreement paves the way for updated legislation, the introduction of innovative tools such as the European Patent and the Unitary Patent, and the promotion of targeted educational initiatives for both the younger generation and the corporate sector.

The enhancement of the patent system will go beyond technical improvements. It will also help cultivate a strong culture of innovation, with awareness campaigns starting from schools and extending to the broader entrepreneurial community. Investments in STEM education and specialized training in intellectual property will be central to boosting competitiveness in a global market.

As emphasized by the Secretary of State for Industry, Rossano Fabbri, the cooperation with the EPO marks “an evolutionary leap” in the field of intellectual property and serves as “a beacon of opportunity” for businesses and young talents aiming to compete on an international scale.

In addition to Secretary Fabbri, the official delegation included Silvia Ricci, Head of Department, who coordinated the initiative, Silvia Rossi, Director of the Trademark and Patent Office, and Ambassador Dario Galassi.

This new phase of collaboration between San Marino and the EPO comes at a symbolic moment, coinciding with the 16th anniversary of San Marino’s accession to the European Patent Convention and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the State Office for Trademarks and Patents.

Toccaceli Bronzetti welcomes this important institutional development, which is expected to create new opportunities for San Marino-based businesses by strengthening the protection of intangible assets and attracting high-tech investments.
